Richard Foxx's toilet training program is really the only effective method. NECC does a wonderful job at toilet training and oversees it very intensively. It's just a much better center in general.
Must google Richard Foxx! :) Does NECC have any parent training programs that the general public can attend on this?

I left a post on the parents.com page but just saw the one above about NECC. I wanted to note that my son's clinical supervisor and the one in charge of his toilet training spent 4 years at NECC. She is fantastic! I can ask if she knows of any training that they do...

I spoke with his supervisor. She said that the Foxx book is what she would recommend you reading, as it is what is used. She said she knows there are some trainings at the school but she is not sure if they are only for parents. Also she said they hold a training workshop in the summer but that might only be for educators/staff. Hope that helps!

Don't beat yourself up if your method isn't working, or even if other "methods" don't work either. I'm not familiar with the Foxx method, but I'm sure there's more than one effective method!
My two boys with Autism are potty-trained now, thankfully. My 5 year old just had a week long sensory freak out about diapers, and through that essentially trained himself. I know how lucky I am with that one!
My 3.5yr old had a hard time with things. I found that he had accidents only while wearing underwear and pants, so for the first few days he went commando. I guess it made it easier for him to remember? Not sure, but he didn't have accidents that way. Obviously you can't go anywhere on those days.
Oh and we also combined that with this incredible potty chart, sortof a PECS-like book, made by a mom of Autism. Here's the link to that book.
Doing those things together has worked, although now and then we still have night time accidents.

I love hearing about the different approaches. And thank you for the link to the book! I was thinking today that we might need some visual supports.
We have our IEP meeting in the morning and Jack's clinical director has been very supportive of me dipping my toe in the water. I'm sure they'll help me figure out the right method for him...

My son is three and I haven't had much luck with potty training either. He is generally in just a tshirt when at home and I just bought a bunch of reward stickers with Thomas on them and made a big calendar out of poster board for him and started using it for different things so he can see different events/happenings because of the routine thing. It seems to be helping. So, I decided to try this also for potty trining and am starting Tuesday as everyone else will be at work/school and less chaos. I will let you know how we make out.

I know it gat be frustrating and depressing, but you'll make it! We (my 4 1/2 year old daughter, Taylor, and I) have been at it for a looong time. Don't give up! he'll catch on!

I don't have much advice. This is one area I think I'm really bad at. For the longest time, I wasn't sure if my son even cared/knew when he had to go. Then one day he was playing in the sink and he turned around and went in the toilet. That's when I knew he knew. I also think it was a "miracle worker/lightbulb" moment for him. However, we still have many, many times where he will wet the bed overnight. It seems to go in cycles.
My almost 3yo daughter is still not potty trained either. And I don't have the ASD excuse for her. Just the slacker mom excuse. sigh. I guess changing diapers is not bad enough to give me the push I need to get her on the potty.
Hopefully, the books you've found and the charts will help you move forward. Good luck! Go, Jack, go!
Don't be discouraged. Do what works for your life! As for your NT daughter, she'll let you know when she's ready...
And as for nighttime accidents, I'm not sure how old your son is, but it took my NT daughter forever to be able to get through the night without a pullup. My pediatrician told me not to worry about it until she was 6 or 7.
So ... pat yourself on the back for doing a good job! :)
I just wanted to say good luck. My son does not have autism, but I read your blog at Parents regularly because you do a fabulous job of teaching us that autism is an issue that effects all of us regardless. Kudos for being such a champion, not just for Jack, but for a different kind of world for all our kids. And am I the only one dying to know what the paint colors in your house are? I love the brown and the green! Did you pick them? Please do tell!
Picture schedules also help. Sometimes the autistic kids will have trouble figuring out the whole sequence of actions - pants down, sit on toilet, pee/poo, wipe, pants up, flush, leave...
My son was easy to train for pee, but #2 took a couple of weeks longer. He'd poop in the underwear and then take it off and throw the "product" in the toilet. Then I drew a picture where he could see the poop coming out of the butt and into the toilet... Sounds gross, but that's what made the difference!

We have lived in 5 states in the last 9 years and I have used the SAME Benjamin Moore historic collection paint colors in every single house! The main color on the walls is called Sandlot Gray --- it's NOT gray though ... it's a really pretty brownish taupe. The green in the bathroom is called Louisberg Green (HC-113).
Paint is such a wonderful, cheap way to make yourself feel at home when you can't do much else.

Thanks, Judith! Did you mean Sandy Hook Gray (HC-108)? I couldn't find the other one. I love the historic collection as well--just did my dining room in Newburyport Blue and couldn't be happier with it!
Nope ... It's definitely Sandlot Gray. Wish I had a number for you. I know a color that I've used for contrast on ceilings and beneath chair-rails is called Driftwood and its number is 2107-40. I think Sandlot Gray is in that same group of shades. I just painted last August, so I think it should still be around...
It's a great color!
Judith, jusy a follow up on our try at potty training, first day, 2times we were sucessful. He started to go in his undies, so We ran to bathroom, he peed no probl;em both times. As a reward he 2 stickers on his calender and 3more for him to keep as a reward. I gave praises, and told everyone else when they came home. Next 2 days, didn't so well refused to go in toilet and just peed his pants, oh well. Off to a good startand then well...was wishing for better luck! We will continue. Hopefully when he starts school that will help. I see you didn't fare too well either,but you have a plan and that is great and you have help! It will work, stay positive.
Your success on day one will return ... Hang in there. We're in this thing (unfortunately ... ) together!

It's been a full week of potty training and not too much sucess. I have tried sitting him, standing him, potty chair on and off and he is all for it but sits for 3seconds and just wants to flush! The stickers haven't really made an impression and will continue for a while. Like you his school said they would work with him and they make all kids go to the bathroom even if they're not trained, so maybe it will rub off??? Though his school won't come to the house like yours. The teachers seemed willing and capable. We will continue forward and keep trying.

Had a very good day!!!! 3 times Chris went potty and the last one he said he had to go. The rewards-SUPERRBALLS~how simple. After the first time I tried to put a sticker on his calendar and gime him a sticker, but he kept saying superball, luckily I found one and gave it to him and he was so pleased with that little ball. When we went out I stopped at the gumball machines and stocked up on them! Later he went 2 more times and immediately asked for a superball. So maybe we are onto something. It's simple enough,too. Hopefully this trend will continue.
